The issue Adam raises is one that has puzzled me ever since the political Right started throwing Christianity into the mix.  Personally I want moral leaders, but I don't want their source of morality as their working manual for managing our country of multiple religions, nationalities, and political positions. It is not our politicans' job to afix any specific religious sect's position on us.
