Just one day a year......

I appreciate your cartoon. Over a hundred years ago R. Kipling wrote of the way returning British soldiers came home to nothing. We could use those articles and poems today. We have vets who are homeless, who have no insurance and more coming. With the switch over from governmental medical insurance to Medicare at age 65 many like my wife, who were disabled in service to their country and not able to work have no social security, hence, they cannot qualify for Medicare. In 17 months she will have no medical insurance, I cannot insure her with what is available at my work as her's is a pre-existing condition. At least she has me but there are 1,000s of other vets who are turning 65 and will lose what little they have. Our senators and representatives cannot read apparently for their responses to us over the past two years has been to refer us to VA for current benefits, and they say that there is no issue at present in our case and have no answer for what happens in 17 months except to suggest buying private medical insurance. Interestingly our local VA doesn't accept that women can have service connected disablilites, they have in the past challenged my wife's 100% Navy awarded disability. Think of this it is necessary for men and women to serve in the military so that we can enjoy our freedoms and for our government to continue, why then does our government ignore them and even give social security, Medicare to illegals who haven't paid in and who won't pay.

All of us veterans appreciate any show of patriotism. When I attend sporting events I see too many NOT honoring the National Anthem and many children in schools NOT permitted to Pledge the Allegiance to our Flag. Thank you again. USAF/Smsgt (ret)

I loved the cartoons. However, I am avet of two wars in the gulf and this is strictly my opinion, i speak for me and me only. I am not looking for a handout or some self serving pitty party, so here goes.I began thinking this morning, what does this country do for our veterans, and especially after my 6 yr old asked what was Veterans Day, proving it is not emphasized enough. I mean they know Santa and Easter Bunny, but dont know the true people who gave all, in contrast to those who give material stuff! Damn, what a thought!Anyway, we as a country should do the following:Give Vets interest free home loans. We already paid the govt, why should we pay twice?Have free medical care at any facility we go to. Everyone else does! Welfare, Those who wont work, deadbeatr dads, ect...Get tax free groceries or free groceries period, so many times per year at specific retailers, who then get reimbursed by the govt. welfare does!

I totally agree with James. I am not a vet but I believe that the vets get a raw deal. They volunteer to protect us all, to keep our freedom and to help other people in need and we treat them like they are nothing. I volunteer at a shelter for the homeless and I see many of them are vets. Its a shame our govt hasnt been there for them when they were there for all of us. Why not give back to them they readily gave to us. Honor!!!

How awesome that is definitely good old USA responding to its men & women who sacrifice their time & lives to protect our Homeland. God Bless each & everyone & a salute from all of us to each & everyone of them because without them we would not be the nation we are. Thank-You!

As they say "freedom isn't free". If you choose not to believe that, you will learn the hard way. Trust but verify. Stand up for the truth. That'll set you free to do the right thing. Pass it on to your grandkids.

kurt carl,Knowing that I spent 20 years serving my country so that idiots like you can say stupid things gives me little joy this veterans day. Just one thing to say, don't let the door hit you in the azz on the way out. Oh, and take Tee taylor with you, seems he fits the profile you have also. BYE BYE
