The modern Republican Party, as reconstructed in the images of both George W. Bush and his political architect, Karl Rove, has not been good at governing. But when it comes to waging negative political warfare, it is the best.

The Bush-Rove Republican Party that John McCain has inherited knows how to sow fear, nurture ignorance and plant misinformation readily disseminated by the right-wing noise machine and far-right echo chamber. With so many unseasoned political pundits, bloggers and lazy mainstream journalists, rumors fill up dead cable air space and talk-radio shows, then seep into the major daily papers. The Bush-Republican Party, frustrated that the media will not give them ample credit for whatever successes it inflates, readily attacks anyone who disagrees with it. And it relishes smearing its opponents.

Perhaps this is why it's so hard for McCain to regain the high ground that he once promised this presidential season. Like any other seasoned politician, McCain understands that negative attacks, regardless of their veracity, often stick to the intended target -- despite how skillful that opponent might be. Too bad the media cannot
seem to call a foul when they see it in black and white.

Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, must decide soon how to respond to these malicious and malignant attacks on his character. Whether there's a flaw in Obama's background (I am not saying Obama is perfect), the Republicans seem to want this election to be about their opponents' flaws -- real or imagined. They don't want McCain the center of attention (once a maverick, but now he's better the less you know him), and they know how to divert attention to a new rising star in American politics.

The Bush-Rove Republicans know how to win votes at any cost. They know code words and understand symbols that raise doubts about their opponents' true character and identity. They know how to make a person's obvious strengths into public weaknesses. For living proof, just ask former Vice President Al Gore, Sen. John Kerry, former Sens. Max Cleland, Jean Carnahan and Tom Daschle. The entire list is too long to print.

Despite all their good luck -- and they have really been darn lucky -- the Bush-Rove Republicans just don't know how to do this: How to run against Obama.

" I'll say this again and again in this column: Americans deserve better from the candidates."

I agree with you somewhat, but I would carry it a little further.

America needs better candidates from BOTH parties.

If Obama is elected, it will be a step backward for all minority candidates.  If he does for the Country what he did for Chicago, he'll make Harding and Nixon look like good, honest men.

Your Obama, the one You helped to SELECT on 5/31, when the democratic party held its political lynching of democracy, well, he has a problem.

See attached;

Attorney General Bennett,

This letter requests the attention of your office in the investigation of Barack Obama’s birth certificate.

In June, Sen. Obama published an image of a Hawaii Certification of Live Birth (COLB) on his campaign website next to the words “the truth about Barack’s birth certificate.” It is still there (see http://my.barackobama.com/page/invite/birthcert).

Since that time, at least two forensics and documents experts have concluded that this image of a COLB, proffered by Sen. Obama as his true birth certificate, is a forgery (references below). Because these experts are working with an Internet image rather than an actual paper document — their work has been highly technical and difficult to document.

As you well know, the falsification of COLB-style forms is relatively simple because of technological advancements in digital and computer applications. The very existence of the computer-generated black block where the Certification Number should be is suspect and, in accordance with the document’s own language about alterations, would invalidate the certificate. For this reason alone, investigation is warranted.

While the two experts (combined 50+ years of relevant experience) differ somewhat on the means involved in performing the forgery, they are both unwavering in their conclusion that the COLB on Obama’s website is fake. Because of the intimidation and threats that Obama’s critics face, these experts have thus far remained anonymous. However, your office should have other means of verifying the authenticity of their reports, and possibly you could consult with them upon request under appropriate conditions.

Researchers believe that Sen. Obama’s birth records in Hawaii may reveal a different legal name, perhaps as a result of an adoption and subsequent Indonesian citizenship, and that Sen. Obama may be intentionally concealing these facts from the electorate.

As Attorney General of the State of Hawaii, please investigate the possible forgery of a Hawaii Certification of Live Birth, and report your findings to the public immediately. In a few weeks, the Democratic National Convention will decide whether Sen. Obama will be that Party’s official nominee for U.S. President.

If there is information about Sen. Obama’s truthfulness related to his birth and citizenship, it is in the public’s interest that such information be fully disclosed without delay.

I look forward to your response to this request for investigation.

Sincerely,

Marg Mackall

I am a proud die hard PUMA member.  I thank you or one of your friends for sending a contact me message about lies and liars and legs.  You must have found my website.  I am ashamed of my former Democratic Party.  I beleieved they were my voice in the Big Government.  I believed they were for all Americans... no matter what your race, or gender is.  I thought they were truthful and honest and trustworthy.  I learned on May 31st, 2008 the exact opposite.  The few that run this party selected a man who has posted a fake Birth Certificate, Is an Indonesian and Kenyan Citizen, participates in questionable drug and homosexual practices, could be involved in a murder coverup and claims that his father mentor is Frank Marshal Davis a communist. And above all is secret racist- 20 years in Rev Wright s Church that preaches whitey owes blacks is not what I call a unifer! I cannot risk my love for America by giving my vote to this man.  He has no record to run on.  He is a bad selection.  I will vote for John McCain and continue to promote my website.

VAL is most likely a Republican posing as a Democrat for nefarious political reasons.

Oh please, give me a break silverstreak.  Anyone who disagrees with Obama is a racist and a Republican.  Obama's camaign is self-destructing.  I am really enjoying the show.

BTW didn't Donna promise to quit the Democratic Party if 795 of her colleagues decided the race.  I hear there is a movement to make it so much easier for Donna Brazile to get her wish.

The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now." This is nothing but a stunt.  The republicons are using this issue for three reasons:

1) It polls well because people don't know better.

2) The oil companies shove their pockets full of illegal donations.

3) It's something they know won't work, don't care if it passes, but just want to use it to score political points.

Why didn't the Republicans make an effort about the energy crisis when they were in full control of the government?

All the Republicans can do is point a finger at the Democrats who barely have a majority do get anything done because of Republican obstructionism.

The Republicans are good at blaming everyone for the country's problems except themselves.

They didn't learn from the '06 mid-term elections and they'll get an even bigger lesson in the November elections.

Bye-bye Republicans . . . you had your chance and blew it big time!

Sudden thoughts and second thoughts

If McCain wins, will there be a new block on our tax forms “Do you want to donate all of your remaining income to big oil”…Yes…No?

If McCain wins, will big oil build enough new refineries to accommodate all of their new oil from offshore drilling, or will hell freeze over first?

If McCain wins, which will get fixed first; Alzheimer’s or the pothole on the rickety bridge in my neighborhood?

If McCain wins, will two consecutive negative campaign ads become a positive?

If McCain wins, will futures trading on the incontinent diapers market be allowed? If McCain wins, will Dell Computers build a new line of presidential computers with no memory?  If McCain wins, will the new supper hour be the current early bird special time & the new early bird special time becomes the current lunch hour? If McCain wins, what’s the higher number by Jan 19 2013; number of military deaths in Iraq or the number of pardons given to the W administration? If McCain wins, what will have lower value by Jan 19, 2013; our reputation in the world or the GOP dog food brand?

The so-called "reform" candidate doesn't talk about issues anymore. He offers no ideas on what to do about health care, Social Security, jobs, education, the economy or energy (other than to drill, drill, drill). His campaign has degenerated, instead, into a steady drumbeat of personal attacks against Barack Obama. Unable to build John McCain up, in other words, they have decided the only way to win is to tear Barack Obama down.

Phase One: Question Obama's patriotism. "I had the courage and the judgment to say I would rather lose a political campaign than lose a war," McCain told those attending a July 22 New Hampshire town meeting. "It seems to me that Obama would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign." A serious charge, especially coming from one who promised never to question his opponent's love of country.

Phase Two: Mock Obama's celebrity. Three subsequent McCain ads portrayed Obama's face on Mt. Rushmore and the $100 dollar bill, compared him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, and painted him as the political equivalent of the Second Coming, or "The One." Don't vote for Obama, McCain seemed to be saying, because he's too famous. Again, a strange argument for a candidate who promised a substantive debate on the issues.

Phase Three: Tell outright lies. In one ad, McCain accuses Obama of not visiting wounded troops in Germany because he couldn't take network cameras along: a charge The Washington Post proved was false. In another, he claims his opponent wants to "raise taxes on electricity," when Obama has no said no such thing. At least McCain has not accused Obama of fathering an illegitimate black child. Not yet.

Phase Four: Play the race card. It was outrageous for Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, to accused Barack Obama of "playing the race card" when, in fact, it was the McCain campaign, in June, that first showed Obama's face on the $100 bill. And it was the McCain campaign, in a diabolical replay of the famous anti-Harold Ford commercial, that deliberately paired Obama with two white, blonde, bimbo celebrities. The message they were sending was clear: Black man plus white girls equals trouble. Who's playing the race card?  Bill Press

Mr. McClellan,

I truly feel sorry for you.

That's even before the election.  If Senator Obama is elected, I will feel sorry for all of us.

I would rather write in the name of a governor (take your pick.  Bill Richardson would be a good choice.) on the ballot than vote for either of the major party choices.  At least a governor can usually manage a State and make life or death decisions.

Disregarding it's own "sunshine rules" the DNC meet behind closed doors, select their candidate, crown their candidate. Donna Brazile sends hateful e-mails to VOTERS (who does that?). Obama supporters spew vile, disgusting comments about Mrs Clinton and her supporters. Any criticism of Obama is met with cries of "racism". Obama reverses himself on every single issue he supposedly stood on and Ms Brazile, the soon to be former Super Delegate, would have us believe (1) that she was neutral and (1) McCain went negative - give me a break!  How is your "new coalition" working out for you Donna?
