Democrats arrived in Denver, Colo., somewhat divided and worried about how the week would unfold. But after four days of rousing speeches, and some backroom deals that allowed primary wounds to heal, Democrats are now prepared to build a joyful chorus of Americans looking for a new direction.

Who would have guessed that the Clintons speaking at the Democratic National Convention would be a unifying force? Actually, I did. The Clintons have always had the best interests of the country at heart, and their speeches reflected that. Surely both Hillary and Bill are sorry she wasn't the candidate on that stage, but both also realize that this election isn't about fulfilling their personal desires. Like most Americans, they know things are off track and made it while addressing the country.

Hillary Clinton's goal was to thank her supporters and appeal to their hearts to back the candidate she came to respect. But once Bill Clinton ran through the litany of issues that matter to the American people, where Barack Obama and John McCain stand diametrically opposed, the focus of this election became very clear. This election is about rebuilding "the American dream and how to restore America's leadership in the world." Now, who can disagree with that political assessment?

In
a tag-team effort that started with Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer and former almost-president John Kerry, the convention spotlight soon shifted from telling Obama's personal biographical narrative to things that matter most to the American people. And it was exactly what Democrats needed to hear and what voters need to know to make their choice this fall.

What most pundits need to learn about Democrats (and perhaps Republicans, too) is that we don't agree until we have to. The Democratic Party has always been a big-tent party. African-American? Asian? Rural? Urban? Gay? Gun owners? Seniors? Rich? Poor? Come on in! All that diversity causes diversity of opinions, too. Democrats don't agree on everything, and they don't all look the same. That's the beauty of the Democratic Party. They tend to look like most of the country. We just have to learn how to make people comfortable with our values and vision for the country. And to trust Obama to fight for their interest.

This is the Democrats' main challenge now: To use that diversity and the strength it gives us to start singing from the same hymn book. Democrats now need to ask the American people to join them in a cause much larger than themselves -- a cause for change and a new direction.

Great article and this is a very accurate statement by you Ms. Brazile: "Democrats don't agree on everything, and they don't all look the same. That's the beauty of the Democratic Party."

And if I could add "and this is how we all intellectually grow. It is not our similarities but our differences that stretch our minds and hearts."

Those of us that have lived in the shadow of the sordid under-belly of Washington D.C. political losers like Donna Brazile (racist-liar), Eleanor Norton Holmes (tax evader-liar), and Marion Barry (crack using-liar) have a just right to be sick to death of this kind of claptrap from the like of this ilk!  Spare us this nonsence, please.
