It's No Longer Just About Hillary

After hearing her name placed in nomination at the Democrats' convention next week, Hillary Clinton will no doubt urge her followers to support Barack Obama. What good that gesture will do for the Obama candidacy remains to be seen. Clinton has already made it several times, but a new Pew Research Center poll shows that 28 percent of her primary voters do not intend to vote for Obama, a number virtually unchanged from June.

Of special concern are women, particularly older ones, whom in the past could be counted on to vote for whatever Democrat was running for president. Many remain scandalized by the sexist attacks on Clinton during the recent campaign. A stubborn 18 percent of Clinton's female voters vow to back McCain, according to a poll for Lifetime television networks. Another 6 percent plan to support neither major-party candidate.

Perhaps Clinton does not possess the magic wand to move her troops. The storyline goes that many women disappointed by Clinton's loss or angry at the nasty campaign just needed time "to heal." Once Hillary gave them the nudge, they'd get with the program.

Thing is, it's no longer about Hillary for many of them. I sat in on a group of high-powered Clinton supporters gathering in New York last week to create a nonpartisan group called The New Agenda. There was little
discussion of the current campaign.

The New Agenda's agenda is to look out for women's political interests where the Democratic Party and old-line feminist organizations had failed. The attendees reserved special fury for the Democratic National Committee and its passivity before the misogynistic carnival. One of their specifics is getting MSNBC jester Chris Matthews fired — and if he intends to run for the Senate from Pennsylvania, to end that idea.

Every member has her own plans for November, including for a few, voting for Obama.

Co-founder Amy Siskind, a former Wall Street exec and Clinton fundraiser, told me, "I won't vote for Obama, but I'm not sure what I'll do." Cynthia Ruccia, a Democratic activist from Columbus, Ohio, who twice ran against Republican John Kasich, is supporting McCain — and organizing other Democrats in her swing state to do likewise.

The McCain camp has noticed. Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and McCain's adviser, met with Siskind in New York. She flew to Columbus to confer with Ruccia, Nancy Hopkins, another New Agenda founder, and 75 other miffed Democratic women. (Hopkins is the MIT biologist who famously protested a suggestion by then-Harvard University President Lawrence Summers that boys might be innately better at science than girls.)

Let's see, we really wanted Hillary, BUT since she didn't get the nomination let's vote for someone (McCain) who doesn't support anything she/we stand for? And oh, by the way, let's be sure to get McCain in so we can get a few more young/super-conservative supreme court justices who will be sure to overthrow Roe v. Wade? Now that's a really smart plan!

True. McCain (or the Potato Chip, as I like to refer to him)is in favor of criminalizing abortion, which ought to be anathema to these Hillary supporters. OBAMA is the only choice. It's very disappointing that Hillary didn't win, but we need to face reality and realize that Obama is not the enemy: McCain is.

Wow - talk about cutting off your nose to despite your face.  Voting for McCain because Hillary Clinton lost is idiotic, vindictive and counterproductive.  And oh by the way, to the average man, the type of female overreaction described will (very sadly and unfortunately) lend a lot of credibility in their minds to those "crude anatomical references".  Hopefully one day this country will be led by a capable woman; Hillary is such a woman.  She lost to Barack Obama, a very capable male.  So what?  There is NOTHING sexist about that; the people spoke and have chosen their nominee.  To the "New Agenda" and Froma Harrop:  put your big girl pant(suit)ies on, stop whining and help the rest of us move the country forward.

Surprise! BHO did not win yet. He may, but the votes will be cast next week at the nominating convention. In addition, it is difficult to know what BHO stands for, because he changes his mind all the time. CHANGE is a really important word!!! Lastly, I do not support infanticide. Moreover, I do not support a candidate that supports infanticide.

You guys still think this election is about policy, and that's why you can't understand the resistance of Clinton voters and their preference for McCain as anything but pique. It's not about policy anymore. It's about two things: Obama's lack of qualification for the office he seeks and the corruption of the DNC. It's about the integrity of the democratic process and the welfare of the country. That's why you'll hear the same slogan from all the "PUMA" and "JSND" people: "Country Before Party." That's what it means.

Like it or not, McCain isn't the devil. He *is* a man who represents a different political point of view on a number of issues; but he's got the character, integrity, honor and experience for the job -- all qualities in which Obama is demonstrably deficient.

An illustration: Say you want to host a dinner party for 12. You have two options. You can hire a chef who specializes in a cuisine you don't particularly care for, or you can hire a busboy who never went to cooking school. Which do you hire? The chef's menu may not be all what you wish, but at least he won't mistake dishwashing detergent for Parmesan cheese. At least he won't poison the guests.

That's why so many are willing to vote McCain. They are putting the welfare of the country ahead of the much smaller issues that you seem to think are the whole story. Step back from the trees and see the forest. Then you'll understand.

Obama is a wolf in sheep's clothing. He is a self-serving person and will not put the interests of America's citizens at the forefront. He will make deals with all sorts of devils, and they will come to collect their due. He is a man of weak character. I don't have to agree with McCain on every issue to feel assured that he will always put his country before all else. He doesn't just offer me words, but a legacy of proof to back up his convictions. I don't really care if other people want to consider me a traitor, idiot, racist, etc. I will sleep well at night casting a vote for McCain, knowing that I put my country first when called to do so.

Obama support infanticide.  This reason alone is enough for me to vote for McCain.   These born alive babies deserve to be protected and taken care of.  Obama voted against it 3 times and worse he lied about it.   I have no hesitation to vote for McCain.

I can't vote for Obama under any circumstances. My country comes before the candidate with the D after his name. I am not an undercover Republican. I am sick of the "after all, we're all Democrats," BS.

We holdouts are the TRUE democrats of this party.  The party bigwigs sure jumped on the racist bandwagon, but were eerily silent when Senator Clinton was called a "white bitch" on national television. Abused women and formerly abused women, like me, died a little more when Keith Olberman said "some man from the DNC should take Hillary Clinton into a back room, and only he should come out."  But you can threaten me with RoeVWade? I don't think so. This is not a bunch of women throwing a hissy fit because we didn't get our way.  The platform committee is supposed to have language to stop the sexism, but too little too late. Senator McCain stood up for Hillary when our own party didn't, yes, I know the c.....word, but you know, at least somebody did.

If someone had used the N word against Obama, all hell would have broken lose, but the B word is fine, after all that is what we get called when we at least try to stand up for what we as women believe in.

So call us names, say whatever you want to, all the hold outs don't happen to be women that is one thing I find so funny about this, the delusional people who actually think this.

I know who John McCain is, I don't question his patriotism, I know he is Country first and that makes all the difference to me. Oh and one other thing, if Hillary happens to be chosen as VP, I still won't vote for Obama.

It has now become obvious, even to many Democrats, that Obama is

ALL FLUff and NO STUFF.

And, his FLUFF changes from hour to hour, depending on exactly what kind of voters he sees in the current audience.

Far, far from Presidential material.

Choose McCain --- a BULLDOG versus a CHIHUAHUA !
