Not long ago, African-Americans could not join country clubs. Yet the Williams sisters dominated Wimbledon, while Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open on one leg.

We used to stand in the balconies; now Will Smith and Denzel Washington set Hollywood's standard.

Once, we were lucky to own a TV -- now Oprah has the No. 1 show in the world. When the playing field is level, and the rules are fair, we do well.

Only 44 years ago, Fannie Lou Hamer led the fight to get the Mississippi Freedom Democrats seated in Atlantic City. In 2008, we celebrate a new Mississippi, where males voted for a woman, and most primary voters cast their ballots for an African-American. This change in Mississippi symbolizes the transformative and redemptive potential of our moment.

And on Aug. 28, on the 45th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, Barack Obama will accept the nomination of the oldest and largest political party in the world. Yes, we can.

We see on the horizon Dr. King's 1963 dream. But we have had our dreams deferred before. We must dream with our eyes wide open.

It has been a time of turmoil and trauma. But champions play with pain and own up to their fumbles, which is why I immediately apologized to Barack Obama for my hurtful remarks. Sen. Obama responded quickly and gracefully,
a testimony to our long-standing relationship -- for which I am grateful.

Our work and our mission continue: To end a war of arrogance that has isolated us from the rest of the world. To bring health care to all Americans. To find a new path of alternative energy, and save our planet. To rescue families from the subprime foreclosure scams. To improve our public schools. To rebuild New Orleans. To build new bridges and levees, and remove lead paint.

Accomplishing these worthy goals will require humane leadership from the top, and a mobilized citizenry at the bottom. We need personal responsibility from everyone, but we can't stop there. That's necessary but not sufficient. Too often conservatives mask the suffering of those left behind in the gaps by stressing anecdotes about the few individuals who have -- blessedly -- broken through.

We also need a policy agenda for real change. We need government action, a caring government that will protect the weak, close the gaps of inequality and injustice, and lift up those Jesus called "the least of these."

Barack Obama just put forth an economic plan to help working mothers, by expanding paid family medical leave, child services and preschool programs -- a good combination of personal responsibility and government support.

JJ

Are you actually admitting there has been some "successes"?

Eyes open - check

ears open - check

mouth shut - check and double check

I don't recall Jesus advocating a nanny state as a good solution, but that we of our own volition helping the poor as a responsiblity.

The words in red were, "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s, and to God, that which is God's."
