Playing The Race Card

Was John McCain playing the race card when he referred to Barack Obama as "that one" in Tuesday's presidential debate? Obama's campaign and its echo chamber in the media surely want us to think so. Within seconds, the campaign was sending out e-mails to reporters drawing attention to the phrase, and the media were quick to take up the charge.

The New York Times' Maureen Dowd somehow claimed that the phrase is "a cross between 'The One' and 'That Woman,'" and meant as a subtle warning to whites that they "should not open the door to the dangerous Other," namely a black man. CBS' Jeff Greenfield said, "Those two words are going to be what the water cooler conversation is tomorrow." Calling race "a particularly toxic issue in this country," NPR's Michel Martin asked a guest, "Do you think that race is becoming part of this campaign?"

This faux racism charge is as offensive as it is off base. McCain's somewhat un-artful reference was born of frustration that Obama has managed to avoid criticism for his pork-barrel spending, even when it benefits the superrich. McCain was referring to a 2005 energy bill that included huge breaks for the oil companies, which Sen. Obama supported and Sen. McCain did not. If race played any role in this calculus, it is the unspoken assumption that because Obama is both black and a liberal,
he is immune from suspicion that he would ever do anything to benefit rich white guys.

Throughout the campaign, Barack Obama has tried to have it both ways on the race issue. As long as he thinks he's safely ahead and no one has the temerity to criticize him, he's the post-racial candidate who refuses to be defined or constrained by race. But when he's being challenged in any way — say, by bringing up his 20-year relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright or his troubling association with Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers — his supporters, if not Obama himself, are quick to claim racism must be the motive.

The Associated Press claimed Oct. 5 that vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's reference to the Obama-Ayers connection "carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret." Racially tinged? The Weather Underground were mostly over-privileged, white radicals from the '60s who tried to blow up buildings, including the Capitol and the Pentagon, and killed one policeman and maimed another in San Francisco. Obama has some explaining to do about his relationship with Ayers, and crying "racist" won't stop legitimate inquiries into whether Obama has been honest about how closely they worked together over the years or what Ayers' role was in launching Obama's political career.

"That one": why not be charitable? McCain was just showing his age: couldn't remember who he was talking about. Kind of like his "my fellow prisoners" moment a few days later.

Wright? still at it, without having the decency to mention McCain's ties to Hagee? Ayers seems to have managed to turn a new leaf: he wouldn't be on important committees if he was still seen as some kind of radical, would he?

And if Linda is going to get so hot under the collar on that one, maybe she should explain Sarah's ties to the Alaska Independence Party, which seems to have been the source of some pretty anti-American statements.

And yeah: I guess it is better that Sarah's church only practices exorcisms & has protected her from witchcraft, while McCain's friend Hagee seems to hate Catholics...

What seems to be interesting is blaming Obama for winning black votes because of his colour, but not explaining what the Republicans have done to actually attract voters from any visible minority. Last time I looked, there didn't seem to be many black Republican governors, members of Congress or the Senate. And that wouldn't have anything to do with it, of course.

How much does Linda get paid to write such drivel?

For geoff- do all left wing nuts like you always double enter their idiotic drivel? Just wonderin'.

Posted By: geoff  on Sunday, October 19, 2008

Jim W: "Always"? Evidently not. This seems to be the first time you've noticed, so... either that suggests I'm not a "left wing nut" or that you're exaggerating just a tad.

Just wondering: which "idiotic drivel" did you mean? the thing about Sarah being protected against witches? her ties to this anti-American Alaskan Independence Party? The racism inherent in GOP policies for at least the past century?

I love it!  You Republicans can't stand to be behind.  Calls of cheating, imbalanced criticism in the media not to mention calls of everything from racism to fear mongering.  All I have to say is for you you all to sit back, stfu and watch how it should be done.

You had control over the last six years and screwed us royally.  And don't go giving the old, "Well, the Dems are in charge and have done nothing so far."  I guess you all failed high school civics and don't realize that a 2/3 majority is required for anything to pass.

So, now with Barrack Obama soon to take the reigns, we won't need you GOP lame asses anymore.

Posted By: Nathan Lechtenberg  on Monday, October 27, 2008

patrick, sorry but, in civics you learn that 2/3 majority is only needed for special occasions, such as a veto override, or amending the constitution, not regular voting on simple bills and resolutions. Simple majority is needed for those two, which is why it was a big deal that democrats won the majority, now they could do something; yet, they didn't, they, along with republicans, have, and most likely will continue to spend freely, putting our country into massive debt. Looks like you didn't do too well in high school civics yourself.

Posted By: Good Life  on Monday, October 27, 2008

Lechtenberg--You need to go deeper into your civics book.  In the Senate it takes 60 votes to break a filibuster.  If the Senate doesn't have 60 votes the status quo (what is currently in effect) stays.

That's why it's a republic and not a democracy.
