"America, a country more comfortable with guns than library cards."That's kind of sad.
Posted By: Mike on Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Sad, but funny. When reading Durst I never get sad. Save sad for later when you're watching TV instead of reading a book. My kids watch little TV and read lots of books, how about yours? It's too late for me, but at least I have imparted some meaningful non-rubbish content to the next gen. Okay, so they read the computer, too--nothing wrong with that! And my son is comfortable with guns and books, although not simultaneously. I try to keep him balanced around 50:1, books to guns. He'll do fine. He'll be able to defend himself if someone tries to take away his book and interrupt his reading.

My kid (11) reads novels & science in 2 languages, will start learning French in the fall. With any luck, he'll never have to handle a gun.

geoff-In the US there are so many guns that learning the proper handling is like learning CPR. You hope to never need that knowledge but when the time comes you are glad you have it.
Good Life: that's one reason why I won't go back to the US. There was also a song the other day about how the "Berlin wall runs up the middle of Main Street."

Good ridance to you gee-off. We prefer those with a spine here in USA.

A sad commentary about the books and guns. But even more disturbing is the fact that the whole Vice President thing will be a moot point come election day. It is my firm belief that on election day it is going to become a vote for the candidate that does -or- does not have a hyphenated description of themselves.

Hey Geoff, but also very well said ... a lot of gunners around, uh, here in Brazil guns are only arming criminals when they are stolen ...

Always need more humor......But, in tough times - it's hard to laugh.Keep smiling!

A false dichotomy! We can have guns AND books. The question is what kind and for what purpose.Like was said after WW2 the Marshall Plan built Schools and Libraries but the Marxists supplied the books! When I see so many books extolling the virtues of Collectivism over freedom I wonder if guns are not safer than a mind crazed with the lust for more Government power to control our lives!

Have made up my (alledged) mind over pretty much all political statements to date, it will truly be a welcome rest for a month, at least. Come September we again can face "Manchurian Alzheimers Candidate" versus "Reverend Hussein Muhammud." Of course either one might get a better job offer in the meantime. There has to be a better life than becoming CEO of an organization going down the tubes.

Hey, Willie,Maybe our former co-vice president, Hill, could challenge “Barack Obama (is black(by half) to the “ritual battle’ of “Ninja Warrior”, maybe the slime pit? Hey, lay off Goodman, the only funny part of the “Rosanne” show, no funny part to NPR (News for the Peoples Republic, all things considered). The really funny part of your comment is the part were you admit, your own personal sad lacking in the value of knowledge, or perhaps you’re like the “beautiful” people who want my guns taken away, but still need their bodyguards to have them. As I recall the only time we didn’t show “books” the proper respect was when we had that flirtation with the “new direction” of the Fatherland and held book burnings, following the new European vogue fashion that most intelligent AH, certainly not to for get the left’s “American Idol worship” with that flashy dresser Uncle Joe, and they say we never listen to our European “cousins”.America bad, everyone else good.

geoff: If your never coming back, then why are you so fired up about what goes on over here? And I wouldn't worry about your kid ever having to use a gun, if the need arises; I'm sure your child will expect someone else to do it for them...like you do.
Speaking of headlines and not wanting to be out done by the bad Americans, here’s an interesting batch to note, with no little irony:“EU immigration plan draws flak in Africa Thu Jul 10, 2:42 PM ETDAKAR (AFP) - New European Union proposals aimed at tackling illegal immigration drew criticism on Thursday in Africa where the plans were attacked for criminalising immigrants and building a wall around Europe….The immigration issue was spotlighted by a latest tragedy on Wednesday night when at least 15 illegal African immigrants, including nine children, died at sea while trying to reach Spain.” Apparently the "Mexico of Africa" is a bit miffed at the treatment of their legal citizens doing "illegal" things in foreign lands, well the cost any way. 'JIHAD ON OUR DOORSTEP'German Spy Chief Warns of Al-Qaida's Growing Strength in North AfricaSPIEGEL talks to Ernst Uhrlau, the president of Germany's foreign intelligence agency, the BND, about the risk of attack by Islamist terrorists in Germany, how German Muslims are training in camps in Afghanistan and the risk from al-Qaida in North Africa.Articles of note:Jihad in Afghanistan: Authorities Fear German Islamist About to Commit AttackJihad: Was Grand Theft Auto IV Inspired by Al- Qaida? The World from Berlin: The Members of Alleged Jihadi Financing Network I just hope we "bad" Americans won't have to "save the world" again, good people that they are.

Take a look at Jack above. Is this one pathetic human being or what?!No matter the subject, this geek is not at all affected by his self-humiliation. He walks (perhaps skips) among us.

No matter what the subject Will Durst will find humor in it. Is the VP important, should we take more time to see who the candidates choose and weigh that in our voting? The VP can be a bullet away from being president, a heart attack, Air Force One going down, There is an endless list, what could happen. This election both are higher risk for something to happen. Senator McCain is on in years, he's approching the age that man years end.Senator Obama is black, there is still enough racism for a crazy to want him gone. For these reasons the VP is a very important decision to be made. We have been very lucky so far, when it came to pass the VP stepping in to fill the shoes of the president gone, they have been able to handle the situations. The recent times, both stepped into not so great situations. President Johnson walked into an on going war in Viet-Nam. President Ford had a Recession staring at him. Both did admiral jobs. We have had our mistakes as Will pointed out.We can only hope that the VP is not called upon to finish a Presidents term but, if he is, we must have the confidence that he can do the job.

rifles,,,, no proplemhandguns,,,, = death2nd amendment has been skewed... if you hunt or want to keep a rifle to protect your family you will have no issue with any of the anti-NRA people, but hand-guns are the real problem and should be banned... PERIOD!
ded hed: Your open mouth is dangerously close to gathering more feet than it can handle.
Pete or is it Sybil? Thanks for adding all you genuinely know to the conversation, you're such a great wealth of information. If ignorance is bliss, you certainly smile a lot. Knee capped any "old hags" lately? Please keep us informed on all you don't know, so many libraries, so few books, after all those last century book burnings.Have a great day and smile darn you, smile :}On a brighter know obama's friend the Hon. Gov. of Illinois (and fellow Rezco beneficiary) is still the center of the federal investigation.
